CFP worked with Sandwell Council to carry out a Green Space Audit to undertake an assessment of green spaces across the six towns within Sandwell Borough. Or work reviewed and updated the previous 2006 Green Space Audit (also undertaken by CFP) to compare the changes in respect to the quality, quantity, accessibility and value of green space across the Borough

We reviewed the green space GIS mapping data and attribute data held by Sandwell Council which documented all green space within the Borough and updated this to reflect the developments that had taken place since 2006. CFP conducted a comprehensive assessment of the quality of over 200 green spaces across the Borough using the field assessment criteria of the Green Flag Award. The results of the assessment were compared over time to understand any changes in quality.

We compared the findings of the analysis with the views of residents through a large scale postal survey of over 1,500 people. Consultation was also carried out with Friends and Community Groups.

 

In line with the guidance contained within PPG17 and the methodology used in the previous Audit, CFP undertook a value assessment of a sample of sites included in the quality assessment. This allowed a comparison of quality and value in a quality value matrix to be developed.

We also carried out an assessment of the suitability for biomass and sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) at selected green spaces, alongside a consideration of alternative ways in which the land could be used.

We brought all our findings together and presented this as a comprehensive borough wide report comparing all the findings against the 2006 baseline. This was supplemented by six town level reports summarising the data, an overall executive summary. We also presented the findings to an officers briefing session attended by over 40 officers across the authority and other partner organisations.

The audit will inform and help to develop planning policy and service delivery for the next 10 years.
