West Smethwick Park – Consultation
CFP was commissioned to assist Sandwell Council with the preparation of a Round 2 application to the Heritage Lottery Fund/ Big Lottery Fund Parks for People programme for West Smethwick Park.
In an area with a BME population of 50.1% which had not been fully represented in previous community engagement we needed a comprehensive consultation strategy.
The consultation element of the project needed to inform the round 2 bid in the broadest possible sense feeding into the Activity Plan, 10 Year Management and Maintenance Plan, RIBA Stage D designs and overall master plan
We developed a consultation plan which outlined how to raise the profile of the project in the local area including forming a project mailing list, on-site notices, social media, regular e-newsletters and coverage in local media.
We then drew up an action plan to set out who and how we would engage different groups including workshops, public meetings, face to face meetings and user and non-user surveys.
Most importantly we maintained a flexible and iterative process, when we found groups who wanted to engage we kept talking and asked them who else we should talk to.
Outcomes and Results
West Smethwick Park was successful in its Round 2 bid and the project including improvements to the boathouse, the Airmen’s Memorial and the building of a new community pavilion.
The team on site are confident that they have designs and a programme of events and activities which are built on a solid foundation of consultation and engagement and the relationships to start delivering them.
