Epping Forest Visitor Observation

The Client
City Of London Open Spaces in partnership with Alison Millward AssociatesEpping Forest images

The Background
City Of London Open Spaces wanted to devise a system for Epping Forest to gather information that would help them to better understand their potential audience, develop a clearer picture of their current audience and use this information to better target their activities as well as providing a benchmark against which to measure success.

The scale of the forest presents its own challenge, at over 6000 acres and with and extremely long and permeable boundary (over 260 miles).

The Objective
CFP and Alison Millward Associates designed a number of methods with the client team including:

  • Detailed analysis of post code data from previous surveys linked in to GIS mapping techniques to produce an effective model of the forest’s catchment

  • Demographic analysis of the catchment

  • A visitor observation methodology including training staff and volunteers to deliver this

  • A face to face and on line visitor survey that was short, easy to deliver and gave relevant data

All of the results from these various techniques will be brought together on an annual basis to develop a picture of the current users and non users of this vast space.

Just add CFP
CFP had worked with Alison Millward previously on a similar project where we added in the GIS component to allow spatial and density distribution analysis of users. We worked closely with the CoL GIS team to develop the analysis of the potential catchment.

The Result
Our first annual report will be produced early in 2011.
